The Sony Project – Westfield Shopping Mall, London. Designing and constructing this staircase at our works caused no problems, except nearing completion we were kindly informed the staircase straddled one of the Mall’s main expansion joints. A revisit to the design and structural engineer incorporated sliding joints required for 30mm expansion. No part of the staircase could be fixed to the Mall’s structure and a clear span underneath without any vertical supports being allowed.
Site installation was a nightmare, masses of hoop jumping, procedures, delays, restrictions and lack of organisation plus late design changes. Designing and building feature staircases for prodigious projects is easy, installing them is a nightmare! However, this eye-catching and quite wonderful glass staircase is a view to behold. Different, it certainly is.
